Blue Bikes needs YOU to come check out a bike!

Good news Utah State cyber space! Aggie Blue Bikes has bikes available for three month check outs. How many, you may ask? 20 + bikes which means if you are reading this right now, you have a HUGE chance of getting a bike for the next three months. Thats three months of pure bicycle bliss for FREE. So what are you waiting for? Logan isn't getting any warmer and you need a way to get around town so don't wait any longer. Get your bones to Aggie Blue Bikes and get yourself a sweet ride to get you through the winter!
Think it's to cold to ride? Lies, we refuse to believe this. Although we do recommend that in the winter you slow it down, keep it real, and ride a little more cautiously, there is no reason to give up the bike just because old man winter has come around.
Now that you know whats new at Blue Bikes, come in and get yourself a sweet ride, we will be here with smiling faces to make all of your bike dreams come true.

In other news....

Last week was USU sustainability week and we got our first run with our NEW pedal powered PA system. Whoa, wait... a new one? No, the old one didn't break, we built a second one so we can power bigger and better concerts. We also built a second system because our first one was being showcased in Portland, Oregon at the Supercomputing conference with USU's High Performance Computing Department. Because we are so proud of our new and old system, here a few photos from the sustainability concert.

HEY LADIES! This Wednesday is your night! 6-8pm at our shop

If you haven't noticed, the cold doesn't scare us off our bikes. If anything we are more excited to ride. Why? Because it is more important for us to ride our bikes in the winter than at any other time of the year in Cache Valley. With those nasty inversions looming in the back of our minds, it's the little trips on the bike that count the most.
But enough of the preaching on air quality, This Wednesday, November 18 6-8pm is Ladies Night here in the shop. What exactly does that mean? Ladies only wrench night. If you are a lady and you want to learn about your bike, come and learn the things you need to know without the hassle of the guys hanging around. Don't know how to fix your bike at all? Well great! Thats why we want you to come! Don't wait around till your bike has crazy problems, work on it at Ladies Night. We promise it will be a good, education, and fun time for all the ladies that come. We can't promise the same for the fellas....

A website with a personal touch

We all live busy lives but the internet makes it easy for us to stay on top of what is going on around us. But when a website isn't user friendly, it doesn't make anything easier for anyone, and we know that at Aggie Blue Bikes. Thats why we have revamped our website to be as hassle free as our bike check outs and one-on-one tutorials are.
Our new website www.aggiebluebikes.org is so easy to use you might just want to ditch facebook for the day and explore our educational videos page or see what Aggie Blue Bikes is up to by taking a look at our events page. If you are unsure about what we offer to students, check out our student page and get the low down.
With recent changes to Aggie Blue Bikes, such as community memberships, we are adding pages so don't get up in arms if some of the pages aren't as navigatable as others, content is coming soon!
Take a look around at the site and stay hip on what is happening at Blue Bikes. You can still come into the shop and ask us what is going on, we like that a lot too.

Bike Week= SUCCESS!

We want to start this blog off by thanking all of you who participated, spread the word, and were supporters of the first annual USU Bike Week. We also want to give a shout out to our sponsors, Caffe Ibis, Shaffer House Bakery, Paradise Valley Orchards, Sunrise Cyclery and the UCC.

With that being said, why was bike week so great? We were able to reach out to lots of people through each of our activities that we had throughout bike week.
Monday, the 19th, when we kicked off the week with our chain lube and bike adjustment station we were able spread the good word of Blue Bikes to the unbelievers and lube a couple chains while we were at it.
Tuesday was a great day to learn bike maintenance and we had a great turn out to our class that was taught by Sunrise Cyclery. If you missed this bike maintenance class but you are dieing to know how to fix your bike, worry not. We will have more of these classes coming up.
Our pedal powered concert went off with a few hitches, like our inverter in the pedal powered system kicking the bucket. But it wasn't long till we had a new inverter and we were up and running with audience members pedaling their way to slimmer bums and carbon free music.
Bike to Campus day was our biggest event and we had lots of participants. Einstein Bagel's gave us so many bagels we were afraid we wouldn't be able to give them all away. But alas, the number of people who showed up shocked us all and we were able to give away all the food that was donated by local businesses. We were also able to spread the good word our pedal powered music making machine.

It was inspiring to see so many people on bikes supporting the effort to clean up Cache Valley's air. Seeing students, faculty, men, woman, hipsters, commuters, jocks, preps, and people from pretty much every walk of life, was a great experience. Everyone has the potential to be a bike rider, it's not just one type of person, it is everyone. If every person changed their mind set just a little bit and said, "from now on I will ride my bike instead of driving to the gym" or, "I will ride my bike to the bus stop and take the bus, with my bike, up to campus.", or "I will walk to the store that is 4 blocks from my house, instead of driving there every time I need a jug of milk or a loaf of bread." or, "I will car pool to church, school, and if possible work."
Small changes make the biggest differences to future generations, our own lives, and maybe even our pocket books. There is a lot to be said for riding your bike, a lot that is good.

Thanks again to everyone who participated and contributed to the first annual bike week. We look forward to next years bike week, which will be bigger and better, no doubt about it.

check out our photos from the bicycle breakfast. All photos are courtesy of Caroline Shugart

Local apples! They tasted so good! mmm...

Just a few folks enjoying bagels and such

Our boss Adam was pretty happy about the bagels.

Bike week October 19-23

It's almost here! We can feel it! The one week of two wheeled excitement and education! It's (drum roll please)... USU BIKE WEEK!!!!! So what exactly does bike week entail? Well, we are glad you asked.
Bike Week is the one week we triple our efforts to show why pedal power in all forms is so important to us and to air quality in Cache Valley. During this week we also strive to show students the importance of bike maintenance and riding bikes year round.
So this is what we have planned to make bike week phenomenal.

Monday- FREE chain lube station outside the TSC from 9-1 with carbon free tunes via our pedal power system.

Tuesday- Bike Maintenance class taught by Sunrise Cyclery. This is something you don't want to miss. One of the master mechanics at Sunrise cyclery will be teaching about basic bike maintenance and it's importance to you as a commuter.

Wednesday- Pedal Powered concert! 7pm, TSC auditorium, $3. We love music and bikes and when we get the chance to put the two together it is complete bliss. We have a killer line up for the night, Julia Mecham, Ryan Morse, and the Angels share will be playing on our Pedal Power PA system. FREE Hot Chocolate and Coffee if you bring your own cup. mmm....

Friday- BIKE TO SCHOOL DAY! We ride our bikes every day and we know you do too, but for the few that don't we have an insentive for you. We want to get as many people as we can on bikes for a day to feel the benefit of bike riding and for doing so we will give you a free breakfast. Yes, thats right. FREE FOOD. All you have to do is ride your bike by our feed station outside the TSC anytime from 7:30-11:00 and we will give you breakfast.

We hope to see you all at these killer activities. Bring your friends, your mom, your sister. Everyone is welcome to attend! Be there, you won't regret it.

USU Bike Week! Burn calories, not gas! October 19-23

First, we want to thank all of you who came to the Pedal Picnic last week. We had a really good turn out and great food was shared between everyone who came. We hope to see more of the same turn out at our future classes and events.
Also, much thanks to everyone who came to our Parts Garage Sale Fundraiser. We really appreciate the support that everyone has given us in helping keep Aggie Blue Bikes afloat.
Now to whats happening in October at Blue Bikes....
We are always looking at ways to keep people informed about bicycles and to teach the uninformed about why the bicycle is one of the best inventions for transportation. This year we are doing USU Bike Week,October 19-23, a whole week dedicated to informing students and employees of USU about what riding a bike can do for you, why bikes totally rock, and how they are changing our world everyday. Sound like fun? Yeah, we thought so too. We will be making pedal power PA systems and bike helmets part of everyday life, because to us, they are.
So keep your eyes pealed for what is going on and stop by the blog later this week for more details on whats up with bike week. Hope to see lots of you at our events either shakein' your peace at our pedal powered show or grabbing breakfast at our bike through Bike to school day book on October 23.

Don't Panic! It's a Pedal Picnic!

We've been hard at work here at Aggie Blue Bikes trying to deliver the best educational classes we can to our users. We know that learning how to fix your bike is just as important and learning how to have fun on your bike, so next week we are having our first ever Pedal Picnic.
So what is a pedal picnic? It is a simple equation really, you+your bike+ a picnic dinner+ tons of other bike riders= the pedal picnic. Everyone is invited, the more the merrier.
We will meet at Aggie Blue Bikes at 6 pm and ride to a near by park (most likely Lundstrom Park) where we will eat, talk about the bike community in Logan, and maybe play a little Ultimate Frisbee.
Don't be shy about coming. Even if you ride a huffy you are still welcome to come to the picnic. This is in no way an event that is focused around one kind of cycling, we want everyone there, fixed gears, scraper bikes and all.

Check out whats been keeping us wrenching in the shop these days. Does Logan have a future with one of these?

Get Smart!...About Riding Your Bike

Bike riding is fun, lets be honest. You know it, we know it, it's a known fact. Bikes make riding to class fun, and easy. They also make going for ice cream and the store a good time. Feeling the wind in your hair and you cruise down the street is a great feeling.
On a bicycle life is slower and easier, but that doesn't mean danger isn't lurking. So what do we have to do to stay safe on our bikes and out of danger? Easy, follow the laws that have been institute for bicycle safety. On a small scale that means riding your bike like you were driving a car. It is a known fact that cyclists fare best when they act and are treated as drivers of motor vehicles. So if you want to be respected by motorists and seen as you are driving your bicycle, ride on the road, where you belong. I don't know the last time I saw a pedestrian going 15 mph down a side walk, which means you shouldn't either. You should be riding in the road.
We want to ensure that the community is well educated on the laws and ethics of bike riding so they can be productive members of society on the road and off.
To help you understand those laws we have two classes this month designed to keep you in the know about staying safe on the road.

Tonight we are having our first Ride Smart class at 6pm, right here in our shop.

If you can't make it tonight come to our class next Wednesday, September 9 at 6pm and learn the details of how to keep it real and ride responsibly.

First Class Next Wednesday!

So the semester has started and blue bikes is on its way to making sure you not only get educated in the class room but you get educated on bike safety at our shop. Our first class is Wednesday, September 2. This class will be taught by Bob Bayn, a League of American Cyclists Instructor and seasoned bicycle commuter.
The Ride Smart class will be approximately an hour and a half, starting at 6pm, and will cover the rules and laws of riding your bike. The class will take place in our shop and on the road so be sure to bring your bicycle with you so you can take the concepts taught in the class and put them to good use.
If you can't make it to the class this week be sure to come to Ride Smart part II next week. This is a great class for beginning bike commuters and experienced ones as well. It never hurts to brush up on your knowledge of road safety and your responsibilities as a cyclist on the road.
Hope to see you all there! For more details about the fall classes stop by our shop and find out whats going this month and in the upcoming months.

Bike education classes? I'll take two...

So we've leaked the word about USU Bike week but we failed to tell you that Bike Week isn't the only great thing Blue Bikes is doing this fall, weekly community education classes is something of equal coolness that we will have as well.
What are our community weekly classes about? Educating you on things we doing normally get the chance to educate the community on, such as bike touring, air quality education, and specific over hauling of parts on your bike.
Community weekly classes will be every Wednesday or Thursday evening, but not all classes are inside at Blue Bikes. Some classes will be a bike picnic where we meet at Blue Bikes with food on our backs and ride to a nearby park to enjoy the company of other cyclists and ride our bikes.
We want to keep the serious business going to it won't be all fun and games. Bottom bracket overhaul, Air quality, and basic bike maintenance are also on the list of classes that are reclaiming cool and recycling it into a blue bike.
Long standing favorite classes like Ladies Night and Bike Movie night will also find their way onto the schedule, ladies night being the third Wednesday of Every month, unless otherwise noted.
We are hoping to see you all this upcoming fall in the shop fixing your bike or in for one of our classes. We leave you with this parting shot of Japans bike parking tower. So it's in Japanese but it's not to hard to figure out what they are doing and why it is so cool. May the bike parking revolution begin!

Blue Bikes update and the 2 mile challenge

"Bicyclists fare best when act and treated and drivers of vehicles"

It's been a long but great summer here at Aggie Blue Bikes. The shop is hoppin', our bikes are moving, we've been able to do some great community out reach with the L@s Abejos group, and we've been braining storming up the wazoo to make this upcoming school year the most cycletastic year to date.
This fall we are hosting the first ever USU Bike week on campus. One week of pure cycling joy and bliss, we are planning on having fundicational (fun+educational) activities that will help you become a more responsible and aware bike rider. If you are reading this blog that you probably already know and think how great cycling is, and we love you for that. But bike week is aimed not only at you but at every student and faculty member on campus who might ride a bike, thinks about riding a bike, commutes just to class, or doesn't ride a bike at all. We know that's a broad spectrum of people but we want to educate everyone on the laws of cycling. Why? Because it is everyone's responsibility to keep the roads safe for everyone and we want to help instill that knowledge with the campus community.
With that being said, What kind of mind blowing activities are we going to have going on at bike week? Well, we want to keep things focused around the Clif Bar 2 Mile Challenge and encourage everyone to try to ride within two miles of home. More details are to come but we can promise you these activities so far.

Moon light and Pedal Powered Music- A twilight concert at the Amphitheater featuring local musicians with their musical stylings amplified on the pedal power PA system. It is of course FREE to everyone.

Bike to School day- Modeled after bike to work day, we are encouraging all of you, students and faculty to ride your bike and pack the bike racks on campus. Blue Bikes will also have feed stations set up around campus and will be handing out FREE breakfast everyone who rides their bike to school that day.

Baked goods for blue bikes- We know the power of good food to keep you fueled while you are riding so we are bringing you baked goods that are worth the price. Oh and we might just have a pedal powered smoothie maker as well. No two things go better together than bicycles and great food.

Spandex dance party- The 80’s were an awesome time for all things stretchy and bike worthy. Why not celebrate those on a Friday night of fun. The spandex dance party will also have a raffle attached to it. All those who buy a ticket are automatically entered into a drawing for bike commuting accessories, such as bike lights, water bottles, socks, and t-shirts all donate by local shops and bike companies. The price for admission to the event is $2. Proceeds go to support bike week and Aggie Blue Bikes.

Thats just a taste of all the goodness that bike week will have to offer. Be excited, be VERY excited because you won't be disappointed. Not at all.

In the mean time, stop by the shop and fix up your sweet ride. If you are intimidated to stop by, don't be. Aggie Blue Bikes is where you should come to be educated on bikes, just like you would go to class to become educated US institutions...if you went to class.

Wednesday closure

Hey cyberspace, Blue Bikes has a new summer schedule for when we are open.
Due to the high demand for our one-on-one tutorials we have been so busy helping you all with your biking needs that we haven't been able to get all of our semester check-out bikes out to all the folks who have signed up for one. So we will be closed on Wednesdays for the month of June. If you have a biketastic emergency hit up one of the shops in town and they can help you get your ride up and running, or you can just wait till we are open on Thursday.
Our business hours are as follows 9-5 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Stop by any time during those hours and we will welcome you with open arms, give you a pat on the bike, and help you with whatever your bike problem is.
If you are wondering what kinds of great educational classes and bike rides we will have this summer check back next week and we will have our class schedule up. We hope you all are having a great summer and that you were able to stop by the Cache Valley Bike Festival last month. It was a lot of fun and a success. We will have pictures up soon. Ride on....

Cache Valley Bike Riders: Your Input is Needed! Read Bellow For Details...

Logan Mayor Randy Watts announced during bike to work week that this summer (2009) the street department would not be doing any chip-sealing. Instead, they would work on repair of pavement defects, especially those that are hazardous to local cyclists. So, I am accumulating suggested hazards in need of repairs. The Public Works Director told me that if we cyclists came up with a "top 50" list, he could probably get them all taken care of. I'm sure that the first priority would be the newly designated linkage routes between downtown and campus, but other hazards, whether they are on designated routes or not could be included.

If you have a favorite pavement defect in Logan that you'd like to see fixed, please send the location and description to me at Bob.Bayn@usu.eduBob.Bayn@usu.edu> and I'll add it to the list I'm building at
https://spaces.usu.edu/display/~A00017343/Pavement+Hazards+for+Bicyclists
You can spread the word to other cyclists. I'll include favorites from anybody on a bike.

Sorry, this offer doesn't apply outside of Logan City Limits. But you can always call the other towns or county to report any pavement hazards in their jurisdiction. Be sure to tell them that Logan is fixing a bunch. ;-)

Eventually I hope and expect to have something more structured and automated online to collect this sort of information, but this will do for now to be sure that we get attention this summer to the pavement defects that are most important to the bicyclists already leading the way to more sustainable transportation in Logan and Cache Valley.

It is bike month in Cache Valley!

With spring semester over and check outs already starting for our summer bikes things have been crazy here at blue bikes but still as fun as ever, especially since bike month is here!
So whats the deal with bike month? Easy, we are encouraging people to take the month of May and start riding their bikes everywhere they go. Not just to exercise but to ride bikes to work, the store, picking up groceries, and picnics too. We want more people to ride bikes and to see how great it is when you ride a bike. To ease everyone into bike riding we have set up a series of events all through May so everyone has a chance to experience bikes in a whole new way.

Our first bike activity is over, the bike band Shake Your Peace came and played Monday at USU and Tuesday at Logan high as part of their Utopia tour. They shook our peaces and we were happy to be apart of such a great thing. If you are interested in their music check out their website by clicking here

Our next activity is the Cache Valley Bike Festival on May 16 at Merlin Olsen Park from 9-2pm. This is a great opportunity for everyone to learn about biking in every form and listen to great live music. In addition to the educational classes we will also have friendly bike competitions and a HUGE raffle for all kinds of gear, gift certificates and a commuter bike. There will also be an opportunity for boy scouts to work on their cycling merit badge.

May 22-23 is the bike tour to Maple Grove hot springs. The tour is 50 miles each way and is a scenic ride through northern Utah. The cost is $25 and includes the soaking fee for the hot springs and three meals. A SAG wagon will be provided so that bikers don't have to carry their gear and will have a place to refill on water and sustenance. There are only 10 spots available so come in soon!

May 29 is bike movie night at the shop at 7:30. Come and watch the cycling classic Breaking Away. Bring friends and family.

If you have any questions about any of the events call us at 435-797-0964 ext.3

See ya on the road!

If you want to see it in action in the next few weeks come to the "Bike for Music" concert on May 4 at the USU Amphitheater on Old Main Hill. Shake your Peace, a bike touring band, will be playing at this all green, zero carbon show that is FREE. If you want, you can also join us on the group ride before the show.It is just a casual thing so don't worry, you can leave your spandex and Gatorade at home. ;)

We are really excited that it is almost May.Why? Because May is national bike month and we have LOADS of activities planned. The Shake You Peace show, The Cache Valley Bike Festival (BIG DEAL PEOPLE! Good news, good vibes, good bike rides

It has been forever since we last posted, things have been very busy in the shop. Even with the passing of the students fee, which means Aggie Blue Bikes is here forever, we haven't stopped running to keep up with the demand that the we are seeing for our time (not to brag or anything). It seems that with all the advertising and press we have received our usage doubled what it was for all of last spring semester is just early March. We are seeing our numbers climb and this makes us happier than a Tour De France winner. Bikes check-out is steady and even with the frigged weather people are still in wrenching away on their bikes.
Educational classes are also going well. Ladies Night is a hit and we would love to see more ladies in the shop for April's Ladies Night class.
Next week is our Bike Movie Night. We are showing the cycling classic "Breaking Away". Breaking Away is a 1979 coming of age film that tells the story of four teenagers in Bloomington, Indiana who have graduated from high school and are not sure what they want to do with their lives, other than hang out and go swimming in an abandoned limestone quarry. It won the 1979 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
The movie is showing April 2 in our shop between the military science building and the Field House at 7pm. Bring a friend, room mate, significant other, or your bike. Hope to see you all there!

Help Save Aggie Blue Bikes, Ride Wth Us Tuesday!

As many of you may or may not know, next week is the vote for the $1.25 fee increase. To get people voting, we are doing a group ride through campus on Tuesday. This is in no way a militant biking event, it is simply a group ride to let people know that voting yes for Aggie Blue Bikes is imperative. Without this vote, Blue Bikes will be forced to close their doors in a year.

So about the group ride.....
Meet at Aggie Blue Bikes at 10 am Tuesday morning, we will ride at 10:15-10:20ish. The ride will go for roughly 20 minutes through campus, hitting main drags through campus, and end up in front of the fountain by the TSC. We will set up shop their and hang out, passing out fliers, do bike tricks, and talking to people about the fee.
We are encouraging everyone to rides to wear a blue shirt (aggie blue!) and a helmet. Bring all your friends, it doesn't matter what kind of bike you have, EVERYONE is welcome.
Please come out and support our cause. The shop will be open all day (as usual) so come lube your chain, adjust your derailleurs or talk bikes with us. We appreciate all of your help. If you would like to support us more via facebook, feel free to use our profile picture as your own next week, and change your status. :) Thanks again everyone!

It's a new year, with new bikes

With Fall semester now behind us and the cold Logan weather upon us we still working hard to help those who are braving the freezing temperatures on their bikes daily.

We are still renting bikes, for those of you who are looking for a ride around town, and we have institute a new rental program alongside our usual program.
Aggie Blue Bikes now does daily rentals that are of course FREE. Lets say you want to go on a hot date and you want to ride bikes, you won't have to worry about trying to scrounge up a cute pair of bikes because we've got em!
Don't worry, these bikes aren't just for hot dates, they are for anyone who needs a bike for a day to run errands, take a leisure ride around the valley, or join one of the local bike gangs (which don't exists).
Along with new bikes we also have new educational classes that are FREE to everyone. Our new classes include bike safety and Utah laws, Ladies night at Aggie Blue Bikes, and Derailer and brake adjustment.
Our February classes are as follows:

February 26- Brake and Derailer Adjustment class.
All Classes start at 7 pm.

We hope that you all will stop by the shop and say hi, with or without your bike. We are always happy to see people come in and ask questions.
With bike safety being one of our big focuses we leave you with this parting shot. This couple may be cute and you may be tempted to do this as well but remember, safety first.
